Medicare Fraud:
How to Avoid Becoming a Victim
Navigating insurance can be confusing—and with scams becoming more sophisticated, it’s important to stay informed. Alcona Health Center offers trusted guidance, accepted insurance plans, and a sliding-fee scale to help make care accessible and secure.
Medicare scam calls are becoming increasingly common and more deceptive. If you receive an unexpected call, be sure to follow these best practices carefully.
- SCREEN CALLS
Ensure the individual identifies themselves – call the number back after the call has ended to ensure it reaches AHC. Numbers can be “spoofed” or show up on caller ID and still be a scam.
- LEAVE A VOICEMAIL
Allow them to leave a message identifying themselves, the reason for the call, and a call-back number. Frauds typically won’t.
- PROVIDE NO INFORMATION
Do not confirm or provide any personal information over the phone. Nothing should be given.
- HANG UP IMMEDIATELY
If you detect fraud, hang up! Don’t click suspicious links through the computer or text unless you’re certain they are not fraud.
Insurance
Do you need help finding or getting insurance coverage?
Open enrollment for insurance plans through Healthcare.gov is only available certain times of the year; however, you may qualify for a special enrollment period under certain circumstances though.
Michigan Medicaid plans such as MI Child or the Healthy Michigan Plan may also be an option. For more information or to apply click here.
If you need assistance, or have questions about enrolling in insurance coverage, please contact your local office and ask to speak to the Community Health Worker.
